Founded in 2020 by Declan Cox, Care to Sail is an ambitious non-profit sail training organisation dedicated to changing the lives of young people who are in, or have been through, the care system, using sailing as a platform for substantial and measurable personal development.
A proven platform for working with young people of all nationalities, and from all social and ethnic backgrounds, sail training provides a framework for personal development in a way that is not achieved ashore, by the nature of its environment, challenges, and rewards.
Children and young people in care have much poorer life prospects with around half of care-experienced individuals going on to suffer from an assessed mental health condition, many going to prison, and very few going to university.
From the age of three, our Chief Executive, Declan, personally experienced the care system having suffered unimaginable abuse and neglect at home. After years of further neglect, as a young teenager, Declan was introduced to sailing. This literally changed his life. Now, as a thriving adult, Declan is determined to help other care-experienced young people who too have had a difficult start in life, and thus Care to Sail was born.
We are determined to change the lives of those who have experienced the care system through sail training
Care to Sail is dedicated to changing the lives of care-experienced young people using sailing as a platform for substanital and measurable personal development.
We believe that poor outcomes are not inevitable and that care-experienced young people should be able to access sail training and its invaluable experience.
